Papua New Guinea (PNG) defeated Nepal by eight wickets in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012 warm-up match at Trevor Hohns Field, Deagon, on Tuesday.
PNG all-rounder Chad Soper, a first grade player with Gordon in the Sydney competition, was a stand-out with the ball when he snapped up 5-22 from 7.3 overs as Nepal managed 213 for nine, with only two of the Nepalese batsmen putting scores on the board. Captain and opener Subash Khakurel hit a patient 68 from 85 balls while all-rounder Hasim Ansari lifted the scoring-rate in the middle-order with a better than run-a-ball 81 from 80 balls including 11 fours.
PNG, in its target chase, then relied on a stylish century from right-handed opener Lega Siaka, as he and Chris Kent (56 not out) combined for a 126-run stand for the second wicket to set up an easy victory.
Siaka, who played alongside his older brother Heni in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010, finished with 106 from 112 balls, including four big sixes. Siaka and Kent's strong performances with the bat were key as PNG overhauled the Nepalese total in the 41st over.
